I’m on record on Oppo and everywhere else, hating on “stanced” cars. Any mods really, I had something negative to say unless those mods fell into my incredibly conservative wheelhouse.
There have been a few times where I have let you all know that I wasn’t always like that. I also happen to have the perfect picture to showcase what a hypocrite I can be:
This is also a perfect portrait of my life late teens early 20's...The life of a fuck . That’s my WRX with black/chro me lipped ROTA wheels, shitty TEIN lowering springs, AEM “short ram” intake, fart can cat back, complete with a huge blow off valve! Also yes, I did feel the need to apply the stickers that came with each “performance” part in the tackiest locations.
After this car and the next one (STi) I bought the E46 M3 that I still own and pretended like I was a grown up until I bought the Ranger. Everything was so cheap for the Ranger, so I did a lot to it but mostly cosmetic/electronic mods.
Then I bought the 02'. This car came modded to the moon. A 1975 BMW 1502, engine from an 1802, 292 camshaft, high comp pistons, twin Weber side draft carbs, aftermarket clutch and flywheel, racing seats, and nothing but felt covered metal to cover the doors. In addition the coil overs are adjustable. I have spent considerable time setting up the car with my pal who is a huge nerd and an structural engineer. He has this crazy wire setup that he uses to setup his cars for autocross. We made changes, drove it, repeat. Until I was satisfied and he wouldn’t stop suggesting that I should be a “drifter mook” with the way I like the suspension setup.
Regardless of any of that, it came out looking like this:
Those rears slip underneath the (already rolled) fenders, ever so slightly. I don’t have a good picture of the rear track, but they’re out...Not “stance-nation” out, but with enough negative camber to handle the way I apparently liked. The front sit’s just a smidge higher, but the car is LOW. For these reasons and more (the wider fenders, the exposed fasteners) my friends are saying that the 02 is STANCED. I’ve argued this tooth an nail because everything on the 02 has been done with the drive (not the look) in mind. They’re arguing that while the “look” is un-intentional, it exists. Touche.
I’ve just bought a VW which is a step in the stance direction just by being an owner. Now I have gone and installed wheel spacers! (I’ve checked the torque on the lugs at least a dozen times since Friday, haha) They have no performance value and will at the very least cause my tires to wear funny. Boy does it look a lot better though. I have almost always opted for the performance variant of any car I have purchased. So I have never really owned a car with the wheels so tucked in the way that they are on the Alltrack. It took a 15mm spacer up front and a 25mm spacer in the back to flush up the wheels. I know they’re fine I know lot’s of people run spacers, but I hate seeing that perfectly machined disk in between the hub and the wheel. I’m going to leave them on and take pictures of one tire every 100 for 5-600 miles and review. Then I’m going to take em off, sell them and buy myself a set of wheels to get the look I want.
Anyway my horizons have been expanded yet again. Maybe it’s because I’m more comfortable with a wrench, but I’m always looking toward the next thing I’m going to change or add. I even have a build sheet for the wagon with all of the parts I want/have purchased...
I hope everyone had a great weekend! Here are some before/after pics from the spacer install.

how does that treat the wheel bearings?

It looks nice. I can relate to the temporary fix of using spacers as well. I still have two sets from different cars that I used as a stopgap until I could get the wheels I wanted. It works, and as long as the wheel is still centered on the hub, you’re good to go. It’s a nice subtle change and it suits the car nicely.

Can’t be good for any of the suspension/wheel components, right?
I really went down the internet argument rabbit hole on this one. Totally divided, some say it’s fine, others say it’s terrible with no proof of either.
I’ve owned plenty of sets of wheels that changed the geometry on other cars without any negative effects. The wheels that are on the M3 have been on there a long time and they’re way off from stock, albeit not as much as the spacers.
The spacer not actually being part of the wheel is what bothers me. I dunno if it’s bad or not but I can’t live with the thought long term, haha.

Thanks! Even my father said that and he hated the idea of them too.

I don’t think we all hate stance, just this:
The impractical
shit like this.

Haha, yes. If I’m being honest, even some of the practical stuff if it looks bad I’ll still turn my nose up.

Ah nice! I wish we could go alltrack, but it is out of our range for $

None of this is stanced. Anyone who thinks your 02 is stanced doesn’t know what stance is and can receive one heavily-weighted internet slap from me.
The stickers on the WRX were some proto-fuccboi/vapebro shit though.

Right! The 02 is an old car setup to go fast by someone who really likes the color green.
I’m surprised you can just leave it at just the stickers...look at this fucking blow off valve!
“proto-fuccboi/vapebro” You’ve got it on the proto, I smoked cigarettes back then.

I like your silver WRX there, (I don’t mind stickers, though I am an advocate of putting them on the glass so you can get them off...) And I think there are kind of two camps of “stance” - the “I would like to change the stance of my vehicle” drop the nose a little or whatever and the “I would like to stance my vehicle”, significant changes to the camber of the wheel placements.

It does put the force of the car through the wheel on a longer lever from the wheel bearing which should cause more wear. That said I don't think a mild spacer would put much more wear on the bearings than having a bumpy road on your commute would.

Came here to say this^^ these are all simply lowered, not even ‘slammed’. Stance is way too much negative camber plus lowering and wanton disregard for the health of your suspension

At some point it stops being a car and turns into a bizarre sort of art piece.

Sometimes you just have to try something to get you by. Good wheels aren’t cheap, and then if you end up with new tires as well, it can get pretty pricey. If the spacers buy you a bit of time, then so be it. At least you’re not ruining the car for sake of looks.

Exactly. Since it’s a fairly dramatic change, I wanted to feel it before I go 3k on wheels and tires only to find out I don’t like the way it drives. It feels great. The downside is that I think I’m going to have to run a 8.5" or 9" wide wheel to get the fit I want. Tires get pretty pricey particularly for 9" wide wheels.

I’ve thought about putting spacers on my e90, either 15 or 20mil. But I know that will lead to the Rabbit whole of lowering it, rolling fended, and the possibility of becoming an actual stanceboi

I’ve already started to buy the suspension bits, lol. However lowering is only happening in the name of handling. I’m going with the entire Golf R setup, but with Bilstein P6 shocks.

Yeah, tell me about it. All three of my vehicles now run 9” wide wheels. And our daily drivers are 20x9s for each vehicle. But so be it. You can also do a little stretch to go a little less than a 265 or 275 width tire. A 255 should still do okay and possibly even a 245, if you have enough sidewall. If you’re into the 18 and 19 inch wheels, the prices for tires isn’t too crazy, but once you bump to 20s it get a bit pricier. And the driving feel will be improved when you widen the wheel and in essence change the offset back toward what the original wheels without spacers were. I’d like to go 10” wide wheels on my S8, but that gets pricey, especially for the better quality wheels. The 9” width works, and with the air suspension, I could drop it a bit, but I don’t want to sacrifice the ride. Detroit roads and all aren’t too forgiving nowadays.

Ooof yea, 20's will get ya. At least they’re a lot more common now.
I’m 19x10 on the rear of the M3, but luckily I don’t drive it enough for that to hurt.
There are only two options that aren’t track tires at the 205/60/R13 size for the 02, haha . One is an all season and one is a performance tire, so I don’t really even have a choice. Luckily they are not expensive.
